Empowering Experience at GDI Hub

Over the summer, I spent two weeks at GDI Hub where I thoroughly enjoyed my time. The people there were amazing and supported me everywhere.

During my time there, I researched the history of hearing aids to help create a poster and 3d prints for the exhibition of engineering at UCL. I also helped develop a website for the exhibition, giving each GDI hub stall a summarised page that could be accessed with a navi lens QR code. Furthermore, I helped set up the Xbox assistive controller and created a DIY pedal to help with gameplay.

During the exhibition, I spoke to many school children, explaining to them the importance of hearing aid design and assistive technology in general, improving their understanding of how and why we need to use it. The children found it entertaining, too, as later on in the exhibition, we had a section on assistive technology for games (where  I also helped set up the eye tracker). They were having fun playing and were interested in its applications and how it works.

The office we were situated in was very spacious; we had designated laptops and seats that made the experience more organised, helping productivity. One thing I really enjoyed about it is the location; the fact that it was located next to Westfield made it incredibly easy to get a variety of different foods for lunch, helping make every day different and unique.

In conclusion, my two weeks at GDI were an enriching and memorable experience. I gained hands-on experience in various aspects of engineering and assistive technology, from researching and creating educational materials to developing interactive exhibits and explaining complex concepts to young students. The supportive environment and excellent facilities further enhanced my productivity and enjoyment. This work experience not only broadened my technical skills but also deepened my appreciation for the impact of engineering on improving lives.
